One of the most important factors to consider when buying veneers is the manufacturing process. While most veneer manufacturing brands follow a manufacturing process that’s more or less similar, reputable brands like Decowood use an advanced manufacturing process that pays attention to every intricate detail involved in veneer manufacturing. You get access to all the celebrated wood species including teak veneers. Continuing on the topic, in this post, we discuss 8 steps that go into the manufacturing of Decowood veneers.
1. Slicing
Once the logs arrive at the manufacturing site, they are first categorized based on their species. They are then softened by soaking them in water at a specific temperature. The temperature of the water depends on the density of the selected logs. After the logs get softened, they are sliced and the sheets are clipped along their edges and bundled together into groups depending on their size.
2. Grading
The next step involves grading and sorting of veneer sheets based on their quality. The veneer sheets are graded and sorted based on important factors such as grading, color, veneer grain pattern, and dimensions.
3. Layon Creation
The third step is layon creation, wherein veneer sheets with a similar grain pattern are joined together into a series of pairs. The pairs are added to larger pairs depending on the required width of the layon. It is the layon creation process that gives veneer sheets their aesthetic appeal.
4. Squaring and Sheering
Once the layon is ready, it is trimmed at the ends to achieve the desired length. The layon is then stitched at the top and the bottom to prevent splitting. After that, it undergoes a final inspection to see if there’s any need for repairs.

5. Pressing
The next step is to bond the perfectly squared layon onto a substrate such as MDF, Plywood, Coth, or Kraft Backing. The bond is pressed under hot and cold presses to ensure a solid bond between the layon and substrate. Decowood uses eco-friendly, urea-free, water-based adhesives to bond the layon to the substrate.
6. Sheering and Sanding
After the pressing process, the next step is to give the veneer its aesthetic appeal. In this step, the veneers are carefully and thoroughly sanded and sheared to enhance their feel and remove excess veneer, if any.
7. Quality Control
Decowood is known for premium quality products partly due to its strict quality control. The quality control step involves a final quality assessment where the veneers are checked to ensure they qualify on all parameters. Some of the parameters that the veneers are assessed on include – thickness, moisture content, type of core material, and construction methods.
8. Packaging and Dispatch
The last step is to ensure proper packaging and dispatching of the finished veneer. Extensive care is taken to ensure that the veneer is protected against moisture buildup and any other mechanical damage during transport.
